My Story

My life totally changed as a result of an automobile accident.  I am writing about this to encourage others to take control of their health and well being.  I am now healthy and fully recovered from the things that set me back as a result of my accident.

I am extremely passionate about health and know from my personal experience what the power of nutrition is!

I invite you to read my story and take some hope from it that you can do just what I have already done!

In 1992 I lived in Tucson, AZ and worked for a small advertising agency.  I was living what I thought was a wonderful life!

On January 31st of that year I was stopped at a red light in my car and was hit from behind by a distracted driver.  In that single moment my life totally changed!

My injuries necessitated several surgeries where I was stapled and screwed back together in my left shoulder, clavicle and both knees.  I had massive soft tissue damage everywhere in my body.  Perhaps the biggest piece of all this was that I had a Traumatic Brain Injury!

What did this mean?  First of all it meant that I had lost my ability to think clearly, speak well, do any organizational stuff, became unable to read and unable to drive any more.  I was, of course, immediately put on many different kinds of medication and became somewhat of a zombie.  This also marked my permanent exit from the corporate world.

I was able to take care of myself in terms of daily needs.  I was fortunate that my husband had his own business and was able to be flexible in his work hours so he could help me out quite a bit.  He’d take me to all of my appointments, which were many.  I had physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, doctor appointments with a neurologist, a neuro-psychologist, a doctor of physical medicine, a chiropractor, etc.  All I ever did was have surgeries and medical appointments!  It took me so long to do anything that my days seemed packed with activities.  A trip to the grocery store was always a very long outing.  It would take me hours to find everything I wanted as I had no mental ability to plan and look at what was in which section of the store.  I’d just find one item, feel great that I found it and then on to the next.  No order in any of it.

Within the first year after my accident I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  My drug regime was pretty much left unchanged as I was already on about 15 prescriptions daily from anti-depressants which were supposed to make my thinking process better, to muscle relaxers, pain killers, sedatives, anti-inflammatory pills, etc.  I did somehow manage to put my foot down when they wanted me to go on the heavy drugs for Rheumatoid Arthritis.  All of these experiences brought about my participation in Brian Injury and Fibromyalgia Support Groups.  I was very busy and my time quite filled.

Here I would like to mention that no one told me much about the brain injury.  There were no projections on how this would heal or progress or anything of that sort.  I was given exercises for it like playing video games on a Sony Sega Genesis to improve my eye hand coordination, etc.

Once the Fibromyalgia kicked in I found it impossible to sleep.  It was too painful to be in bed so I spent most of my nights at the game machine playing games all the way through.  I did actually get quite good at some of them.  For years I didn’t really sleep.  I know what it feels like to have every inch of your body hurt, even the eye lashes!

I was aware that all of the practitioners I worked with talked about my great attitude.  Here I was in a totally different life and way of being and I was upbeat, cheerful and happy!  I now think they must have all thought I was crazy.  My approach was to naturally just take each day as it came and make the best of it.  That’s how I have always operated and that stuck with me!  For that I am eternally grateful!  However, I wasn’t really getting any better.

I was still drinking up to 4 liters per day of Pepsi, eating sugar, white flour, and “food” products that are full of chemicals, basically whatever I felt like.  It never occurred to me to change my eating habits.  Little did I know what was in store for me as time went on.

About 5 years after the accident, I was living back in Colorado , where my family was, and was really feeling pretty good about things.  I had a pretty good quality of life, I thought.  All the drugs were doing their part and I got more comfortable and pretty much believed that this is what it would be like for the rest of time.

Somewhere, buried well out of my consciousness, it appeared that I also had a great desire to heal further.  I found a practitioner in my town who was a massage therapist, herbalist and nutritional consultant.  I made an appointment with her and learned that she had freed herself from the pain of Fibromyalgia.  I was willing to give her program a try.

The first thing she did was take me off any kind of soda drink and to put me on organic foods entirely.  She added a few supplements and tinctures and did body work with me.  Three days after my first visit and change in dietary regime, I was able to sleep through the night!  I was actually getting some real and restorative rest.  I stuck to her protocol without fail.  Along with my new way of eating this included a minimum of 20 minutes of unfiltered sunlight each day, drinking lots of pure water, walking as an exercise for at least 30 minutes per day and having good, solid relationships.  I never faltered.  At the end of 9 weeks I was pain free and symptom free of both the Fibro and the Rheumatoid Arthritis!  This was incredible to me and so wonderful!  Even my brain was on the mend.  I was now able to drive which gave me great freedom.

I was still seeing my new team of doctors when I started down this new path.  Several years ago my neurologist told me that I should just give it up.  I was not ever going to get any better and should not expect to read ever again!  This hit me pretty hard but basically I chose not to believe him!  Suffice it to say that I spend a great deal of time reading all kinds of things now.  It started slowly where I could read short articles but not stories that I had to track page to page.  That was out of my realm at that point.

Several years ago, a great friend asked me if I would be interested in looking at a business she was just getting involved in.  It was with a company who was selling whole, raw foods and healthy skin care products as well as other health oriented things.  I signed up and started eating these products.  I had already started to wean myself off many of my drugs and found that with these new foods I could go even further.  I have now been off all prescription medication for about 5 years.

After a while I began to notice a real change in my mental abilities.  One night I decided to pick up a book and read it cover to cover.  It absolutely blew my mind that I could do this.  It was “The Business School…for People Who Like Helping People” by Robert Kiyosaki.  Not even a novel!

This was sort of a one shot wonder.  I found I could not really follow a story just yet but knew this would come in time.

I had now discovered the world of alternative medicine and was very happy to walk away from the established medical world that had really failed me.  I became interested in all kinds of things with diet and nutrition at the center of it all.  I had been and remain healthy and symptom free of all that I had been diagnosed with over the recent past.  How amazing!

On my journey with the doctors I had noticed that all medical records described me as depressed!  I never for one moment felt depressed and wondered why they were saying that about me.  I finally persuaded my internist to send me to a psychiatrist and let them decide.  It didn’t take long.  The psychiatrist said that I was not depressed and that all the other doctors simply thought that I MUST or should be depressed!  How ridiculous!  I guess they all thought I was delusional as well.

I now work with an acupuncturist to keep myself balanced, a massage therapist for overall health and that’s it!  I have gotten much more deeply involved with my spiritual side and do occasional sessions with a variety of healers.  It’s all about fine tuning my entire being!

I have done other things which have helped me and that I highly recommend to others.  You can find out about them on my referral page.

There are undoubtedly more things I could include here but it feels like I’m just going on and on.  The point of all this is to encourage you, who are reading this, to take back the control you have over your health and well being!  Clearly there is a time and a place for the established medical system; however, I truly believe they do more harm than good for lots of people.  Do you know that statistics show that doctors are the third leading cause of Death in the United States?  This comes from an article in the Journal American Medical Association, July 26, 2000: 284(4);483-5.

I am suggesting that each of us can take control and regain our health, largely through nutrition.  I did it and believe me, if I can do it so can you!

It is my intention to encourage everyone to look at the “big picture”.  What you put in your mouth and on your skin hugely impact your health and the ability of your body to function the way it was designed to.  A rule of thumb I use is that if I can’t eat it I will not put it on my skin.  There are so many things I have to say on this but that is not what this first outing is about.

Please take control of your life and eat yourself back to health!  Thank you for taking the time to read through this.  I hope it will encourage you on your journey towards health.  I wish you well.
